With the famed Aerial Lift Bridge turning 100 years old 2 local artists have been inspired to create works depicting the iconic bridge.
Jen Neff of Graphmark in Superior,WI has designed a fully leaded crystal iceberg standing nearly 6 inches featuring a ship passing under the bridge.Graphmark is one of the nations leaders in etching technology.Their work which includes etching of the olympic torches can be found worldwide.
The large curved glass etching was designed by Gary Lundstrom.Gary has created a collection of Lake Superior themed gifts and has also done works for such businesses as Coors Brewing,University of Wisconsin,Black Bear Casino,and Copper Mountain Ski Resort.Garys love of the Northland is reflected in all his Lake Superior images.His work may be viewed online at www.greatlakedesgn.com
The Aerial bridge was completed in 1905 to connect the Island of Park Point with the mainland of Duluth.Originally designed as a ferry bridge its first 20 the bridge operated horizontally instead of vertically.
Although it has had a few minor changes over the years the basic design is the same today as when it was finished 100 years ago.
Along with local artists creating works to honor the bridge nearly 50 festivals and events will happen this summer in celebration of the centennial.
